New York, 2016. Angela Tam was a month into a trip that had given her everything the city promises, and the particular isolation it reserves for people looking for somewhere to belong inside it. She went to Chinatown the way you go somewhere you recognise from the inside. Not as a tourist. As someone searching for the frequency of familiarity.

She found it. In the language. In the rhythm of the streets. In the older generations moving through their days with the unhurried authority of people who had made a life somewhere and meant it. She was not from there. But it felt, in some necessary way, like home.

Angela had her Canon A1. She was shooting on film. She started documenting what she saw, not as a photographer looking for a frame, but as a person trying to hold onto something she didn't want to lose.

The Work


Back in Sydney, those photographs became Observer. Angela drew over them by hand, then collaged, film photograph and drawn line layered until neither was quite separable from the other. One part of the image photo-real, another rendered in mark and gesture, the boundary between them deliberately unstable.

The technique was a direct product of how the images were made, in a state of reverence, on film, in the presence of people who had spent decades navigating the same diasporic distance Angela was only beginning to understand herself. The Chinese-Australian experience in Australia. The Chinese-American experience in New York. Different cities, same negotiation: how do you carry a culture that the world around you doesn't always see?

The subjects of Observer are the people who had answered that question. The ones picking fruit, playing cards, reading newspapers. Making their lives with the quiet dignity of those who no longer need to prove anything. Angela Tam stopped, looked, and brought them back in a form that demanded the same attention from everyone who entered the room.




The Legacy


Observer was shown at Cool Mac, Kirribilli, and became the genesis of everything Moiré Archive built there. The Kurumac mural. A Love Below Live. Years of creative collaboration with that community. It all started with this exhibition. With Angela Tam's eye turned toward a Chinatown she wasn't from, and the people she recognised anyway.
